PFSweb公司纳斯达克股票代码:PFSW)股价反弹51%,但业务仍落后于行业

2023-10-13 02:40

PFSweb, Inc. (NASDAQ:PFSW) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 51% gain in the last month alone. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 19% over that time.

Although its price has surged higher, PFSweb's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.8x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the IT industry in the United States, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 1.6x and even P/S above 5x are quite common. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does PFSweb's Recent Performance Look Like?

For instance, PFSweb's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on PFSweb's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as PFSweb's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 2.3%. This means it has also seen a slide in revenue over the longer-term as revenue is down 7.0% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Weighing that medium-term revenue trajectory against the broader industry's one-year forecast for expansion of 9.9% shows it's an unpleasant look.

With this in mind, we understand why PFSweb's P/S is lower than most of its industry peers. However, we think shrinking revenues are unlikely to lead to a stable P/S over the longer term, which could set up shareholders for future disappointment. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent revenue trends are already weighing down the shares.

What We Can Learn From PFSweb's P/S?

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift PFSweb's P/S close to the industry median. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

It's no surprise that PFSweb maintains its low P/S off the back of its sliding revenue over the medium-term. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises either. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
