Social media platform Pinterest is getting news outlets and other publishers to help them sell ads, The Information reported on Monday.
The report stated that Pinterest is testing a new program to sell advertising on their Pinterest pages using their computerized ad-auction system, and publishers would then share the resulting ad revenue with Pinterest, said Jeremy Jankowski, the company's publishing head for North America.
The idea is that publishers have their own relationships with advertisers and can help Pinterest attract more advertising dollars in exchange for a cut. This would also give publishers an opportunity to work with more advertisers on larger deals, the report said.
Notably, though, it is the small social media firms like Pinterest that are looking to partner with publishers, the report said, but the company isn't the only one pursuing the strategy.
TikTok executives, on the other hand, also recently talked with digital media firms about a tie-up to sell more custom video content to advertisers, The Information reported, citing two publishing executives who had discussed this possibility.
Last month, LinkedIn’s Wire Program, through which news outlets can sell ads in front of the videos they distribute, moved to the beta phase of testing. While publishers split the revenue with the company, they are solely responsible for the ad sales, although LinkedIn is exploring a joint selling arrangement, a spokesperson told The Information.
